THOMAS STORER
One of the mediums I chose to use this year is film. I chose to explore film because I enjoy the complexity of it. To make a film you must first understand all the individual mediums before combining them together. Another medium I chose to work in this year is an acrylic painting. I chose to use acrylic paint because the colours are very bright and make you feel warm in the long cold Canadian winter. Another medium I chose to work in this year is drawing and created a series based on a bird in various humorous situations.
Since I started studying art, the largest thing that has changed for me is understanding that I need to explain my works. I used to think that the painting was the entire work but now I am starting to ask myself questions about what the artist means and why they did it.
One of the artists I studied was Edward Burtynsky. He inspired me in the way that he uses a film to educate the world in an entertaining way. In his case, he is showing the effect humans have had on the population. I want to create a film in a similar form to create an entertaining yet informative film about my March break trip.
The largest challenge of creating the film was planning the film before creating it as
usually I spend less time planning and more time putting the story together while editing it. When creating our acrylic painting the biggest challenge was working with others on such a small canvas and the biggest success was the 3D lettering on the painting.
I hope the viewers of my artwork experience a sense of excitement when they see my film one day. I hope they feel inspired when they see our acrylic painting. When people view my bird cartoons I hope they feel uplifted!
